GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Established in 1924, Kafue National Park is Zambia's oldest and, at 22 400 km, its largest national park. It is mad up of a vast, gently undulating plateau ranging in altitude from 970 to 1 470 m above sea level. A few hills are located along the middle reaches of the Kafue River and much of the area to the west and south is dominated by expanses of Kalahari sand. The region is watered by the Lufupa and Lunga rivers, tributaries of the Kafue, which forms part of the eastern boundary. the vegetation consists of grassland, with the extensive Busanga Plain in the north, and of miombo, mopane and riverine woodland. Stands of teak grow throughout the park, but are most common in the south. Mammals are well represented in Kafue and include elephant, hippopotamus, buffalo, sable, roan, Lictenstein's hartebeest, puku, red lechwe o the usanga plain, lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dog. The Kafue river and its flood plain are particularly well known for their rich birdlife, which is represented by about 450 species. Location: Western Zambia; west of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka follow the main road westwards for 147 km to Mumbwa; from Mumbwa continue westwards towards Kaoma for 66 km to the turnoff to Lake Itezhi-Tezhi, which lies I the park, 115 km further on. This road is generally in good condition and is suitable for ordinary vehicles. Alternatively, from Livingstone in the south follow the main Lusaka road northwards for 126 km to Kalomo; at Kalomo turn left and drive for about 80 km to Ndumdumwense gate. Accommodation: A great variety of accommodation is offered at Kafue, ranging from self-catering to single-part luxury camps. The Zambia National Tourist Board operates the 40-bed Chunga Safari Village with full-catering and self-catering camps (Kalala, Kanzhila and Chunga) which provide thatched huts with separate ablution facilities, and a cook to prepare visitors' food. Ngoma Lodge and Musungwe Safari Lodge are privately run. Lufupa, Ntemwa Safari and Moshi camps are run by Busanga Trails and are fully catered. There is a camping site at Chunga where camper vans may be parked overnight. Information on official camps should be obtained fro the tourist board, as several camps have been closed and others are being renovated. The Wildlife Conservation Society of Zambia operates a self-catering camp, David Shepherd Lodge, on the shore of Lake Itezhi-Tezhi. Although the camp is intended only for members, visitors can take out temporary membership in order to stay there. The lodge has 3 4-bed chalets, each with its own bathroom. Busanga Trails Ltd has 4 camps in the northern part of the park, and Hippo Camp, in the north-east, is run by Lubungu wildlife Safaris. Other facilities: Extensive network of game-viewing roads; several of the private operators conduct fishing or game- and bird-watching trips by boat; fishing at designated sites. Fuel is usually available at several points in the park, but it is advisable to check availability in advance. Unless you are staying at a camp with full catering, take all food and drink requirements with you. Open: Although some camps remain open throughout the year, others close from October or November through to May; check with the relevant authority. Beware: Malaria, visitors may get out of their vehicles only at designated picnic or fishing sites.
